Elevator Pitch

Senior Linux and Infrastructure Engineer | Auckland | Available for contract

I build and run infrastructure where failure costs money. Since 1988 I have done that in telecoms and banking, in New Zealand and overseas, moving from exchange software to enterprise Unix and Linux fleets to cloud platforms.

Most recently I spent more than eleven years at a trans-Tasman bank. I automated security response across 3,900 Linux and Solaris hosts, then ran Kubernetes cluster and artifact operations on AWS for a platform spanning Australian and New Zealand tenancies.

My approach is consistent: understand the problem before touching it, choose the simplest tool that works, and automate the manual effort away.

Evidence

  • Scale: automated real-time security event detection and response over Kafka across four domains, growing from a 5-server pilot to 200 servers per run, four runs a day.
  • Delivery under pressure: separated a division from its parent bank’s infrastructure, securely and on time, ahead of a $762M sale.
  • Pragmatism: replaced a long-running Java job with standard shell utilities that finished in three minutes.
  • Removing toil: automated batch status lookups for multiple teams, saving three hours a day of manual calls.
  • Foundations: led the install of New Zealand’s first 0800 core hardware, and proposed and supervised a development environment that cut training time from three months to three weeks.

I am looking for contract work in Linux, infrastructure automation and platform operations.
